Durandal reimagines the Carolingian Empire, blending history and myth with themes of faith, loyalty, and betrayal. Inspired by The Song of Roland, it offers deep storytelling and moral dilemmas. A World of Myth and History

The world of Durandal draws its essence from the legendary Carolingian Empire, a setting that blurs the lines between history and myth. Inspired by The Song of Roland and the Matter of France, the game reimagines an era of chivalry, faith, and heroism. Kings and knights wage war in the name of honor, while saints and relics influence the mortal realm. Here, loyalty is tested, betrayals cut deep, and every victory carries the weight of sacrifice.

Key Themes: Faith, Loyalty, and Betrayal

Durandal thrives on timeless themes that resonate through every tale of knighthood. Faith—both divine and personal—guides characters as they confront impossible choices. Loyalty binds allies and nations but can be strained by ambition or betrayal. Heroism is ever-present, yet its true nature is often defined by moral ambiguity. These themes ensure that every story in Durandal is as much about the characters’ souls as it is about their swords.

Legends That Inspire

Durandal pays homage to historical and legendary figures who have become larger than life. From Charlemagne, the great emperor whose empire inspires the setting, to Roland, the heroic knight who fought to his last breath at Roncevaux, the characters of this world are steeped in myth. Players will walk in their footsteps—or perhaps stand against them—as they carve their own legends into the annals of history.

A Nod to the Community: Mildra the Monk

Durandal is not only about legends but also about the community that helps create and share them. I’m thrilled to share that Christian John Prokop, a.k.a. Mildra the Monk, will be interviewing me again about Durandal in the near future! Mildra is a cornerstone of the TTRPG community, bringing creators and players together through insightful conversations. He’s also been hard at work on his own beta version of a Final Fantasy-inspired gamecheck it out here. If you love storytelling and deep mechanics, you won’t want to miss what he’s creating.
